Power Rangers being the International Version

People have said that Super Sentai is the "Japanese version," while Power Rangers is the "American version." Indeed, that's all true. But if looked into, one can see that Power Rangers can also be considered the "International Version." Power Rangers has had far more marketing around the world than Super Sentai has. And this tends to create a major imbalance between the two franchises.

Super Sentai has mostly remained in Japan only. In recent years, it has tried to leak itself out into other countries. Little by little. Unfortunately, many people really don't care for Sentai to try and expand itself outside of Japan, saying that Power Rangers is more than enough. And on an even more extreme level, certain people on Rangerboard wish to make sure that Sentai stays in Japan and to never expand from it.



Saban himself tends to play an interesting role in this himself. Many toku fans have wondered what in the world he thinks of the tokusatsu franchises. Some say he absolutely loves it, due to how he wanted to bring shows like Sun Vulcan, Bioman, and Jetman over to the states. As well as how he is bringing the franchise back with Samurai. And, how Power Rangers was given good quality when it was in his hands (Space, LG, LSR, TF). Others say that Saban could care less. People have blamed Saban for giving toku a bad image with MMPR. As well as making certain creations like Masked Rider, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and Mystical Knights of Tir Na Nog, which were all shows that many fans frowned upon. Fans have also complained about how Saban never acknowledges Super Sentai's existence in interviews. For example, when he was asked "why Power Rangers had been going on for such a long time," he did not mention Sentai or Toei helping him out at all. Overall, people love how Saban cares for the Power Rangers franchise enough to bring it back next year with hopefully good quality. While others just think he's a guy who doesn't care about the toku genre as a whole and just wants money.

While Power Rangers fans defend Power Rangers when it's quality is compared to Super Sentai..... Super sentai fans defend Sentai when it's amount of exposure is compared to Power Rangers. Which is indeed a big problem, and is a major fuel source for why fans rage a lot.

Should Saban Adapt Goseiger Or Not?

Looking at the fact that Saban is adapting Shinkenger for 2011's Power Rangers and it's bound to show by next year, which I assume that Goseiger ends and Goukaiger (if that' ever the real 2011 Sentai for the 35th entry), it can be questioned whether or not Saban should adapt Goseiger after his Shinkenger adaptation ends or not since he's one series late already. I mean, after the end of RPM, Disney remastered MMPR in a way that displeased fans that the series is going to be DEAD and Saban will re-air MMPR unedited.

It's just too early to judge whether or not the next series Goukaiger will be adaptable in a sense, that, if the story of Goukaiger will involve a Decade-like story. But then again, it's no problem if Saban can re-secure Judd Lynn for new ideas. For me, well it has to be thoroughly thought of before jumping into irrational conclusions. :-P

If a Goseiger vs. Shinkenger movie will happen, I wonder if Saban can utilize the movie to introduce the Goseigers as allies and not as a series like he did with Kakuranger footage. Maybe not. I don't think Saban would want to do it again.

The New Power Rangers Cast Looks Promising

I found this picture on Morphin' Legacy and I think there's going to be a LOT of great things to come from these guys. So maybe, some things I wanted to happen didn't happen (life isn't perfect) but I'm seeing these newbies will probably start their career right with Saban's adaptation of Shinkenger.

No, it's not Zyuranger. It's Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers dubbed in Japanese. Found this on YouTube and thought I'd share with everyone. I believe the dub was done by Toei, not totally sure. The dub is pretty good, I like Jason's voice for the dub. Mixing Japanese voices with the epic background music makes it 100 times more epic than it already was! XD This proves that Toei actually likes Power Rangers. I think there were more dubs for the series, all the way up to Lightspeed I think? Someone wanna get a hold of Toei and ask them to do more dubs? RPM perhaps? And, -maybe- Jungle Fury? Lol

Power Rangers Mystic Force

Surprised by this one, aren't you? I certainly am. I've underrated this season before, only because it focused on Nick too much. But I looked over the first ten episodes again and, it's okay. The plot and story for this season is a little more difficult to understand then previous seasons. One of the main reasons why this season is underrated because it's a Disney season and 'butchered' Magiranger, as fans like to put it. I think one of the reasons why Mystic Force is underrated because this season is a little difficult to understand because past Power Rangers seasons have been simple. You understood the story right from the beginning. Even Operation Overdrive was fairly simple to understand. This story has to be one of the most defined and also one of the most fun, especially if you are a fan of fantasy shows. I think one of the things that distinguishes this season from past seasons is that it is not really the most action filled season out of all of them. Mystic Force is very much based on mostly story.

One of the issues with this season is that the acting is really not that good. Firass Dirani, Nic Sampson, Melanie Vallejo, Angie Diaz, and Richard Brancatisano who play the main rangers are not really that talented in the acting department. They do have some moments of good acting especially in the season finale "Mystic Fate" but most of it is just hard to watch. Another issue is the Red Ranger focus. There was just too much revolving around Nick and for me, I didn't like it. But I learned that it doesn't bother me as much as it did before.

Power Rangers Ninja Storm

When I first heard about Ninja Storm I was very excited. I thought it would be dark, mysterious with action packed fight scenes. However when I started watching it i soon found that this wasn't the case. PRNS was too comical for my liking back then, the villains were to slapstick comedy funny and the rangers themselves seemed too laid back all the time, that's why it's underrated. Looking at Ninja Storm now, it's pretty good, actually. Because if you're a fan of MMPR or happen to like MMPR, you'll like this too. A villain with strong cynical intentions like Lord Zedd would have been great in this though.

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy

Lost Galaxy is probably one of the most underrated PR series due to it just coming off of Space and starting the standalone series. Despite plot holes it continued some stuff In Space started: teamups with past alumni, sympathetic villains, and the grand feeling of a space adventure. Sure it may not have that end all feeling that Space had, and no matter how many plot holes this season had, I LOVE this season. One of my favorites and made me continue watching the show today. I think there are a lot of reasons, but a big one would have to be Trakeena, who's pretty much my favorite non-MMPR villain. I was honestly kind of sad when she took a nosedive into crazyville; it's hard to imagine that she went from being a fairly background sort of villain to getting so good at swordplay that she could take down two monsters at once.

Power Rangers Jungle Fury

Surprised by this one too? I'm not. Because this is probably the best and my favorite season Kalish produced. Main reason why it's usually underreated is because it's a Disney season and 'butchered' Gekiranger. The writers strike is one reason why this season is underrated, there were a few episodes that just didn't seem to move things along, or tried to hard on the message. There was a rumor that Chip came back and wrote a few episodes, which makes the season a little more enjoyable. But the season was a success for me. In a few ways, it almost seemed to pay tribute to the old days of Power Rangers, with RJ inventing weapons or working on them, and the Rangers actually having to train and master skills before getting new levels or gear. The grouped story arcs played out very good. The Jarrod and Dai Shi conflict was handled well. I enjoyed that. All the characters were very relatable, and at times I found myself being just as interested in Jarrod and Camille as I was the Rangers. The season isn't bad, it's just people are biased.


So the next time you see a Power Rangers season that you think 'butchered' Sentai, don't complain about it, or how it doesn't work because of such and such a reason. Enjoy PR for what it is...it's own show with a very interesting over arcing tied story.

Originality in Power Rangers

This post is somewhat similar to the one FantasyLeader did a few months ago, talking about the originality in Power Rangers. Fans like to complain that Power Rangers is never good unless it's exactly like it's counterpart.

Some fans tend to complain that Power Rangers is better when it stays true to the original content. I fully disagree to this. I mean, yes, we had some good seasons like Lightspeed and Time Force. But sometimes it feels like I'm watching GoGo V and Timeranger with a different cast.

Fans also complain that Power Rangers is too campy and cheesy. This, makes no sense...at all. Since the campiness and cheesiness make Power Rangers unique.

Here's an example, when the producers and writers saw Megaranger, they thought is was a space season. But when they actually saw footage of the show, it wasn't, exactly. Megaranger was video-game themed. They never left Earth, their ship was in orbit, it just flew down to Earth for the fights. There was no footage of the ships sailing the stars, no alien landscapes or monsters, no space at all from the Sentai that was destined to be 'Power Rangers in Space.' But since the producers thought that it was gonna be the last season of Power Rangers, they went ahead and still went with the space idea. Shot their own footage of space and such. It looked bad, but it worked. It's also loved as the best season of Power Rangers ever.

Another example would be Power Rangers RPM. Disney hired Eddie Guzelian who had worked with a few Disney shows such as American Dragon: Jake Long and Kim Possible. When Guzelian first saw footage of Go-Onger, he basically went nuts. He wasn't sure on how to make it into a Power Rangers season. He defied the Sentai material, changed Go-Onger significantly. Go-Onger was turned into a post apocalyptic setting with a mature tone, a Terminator/Mad Max feel and a new villain named Venjix. The season was serious, yet lighthearted, serious, yet funny. This season was the best we've seen in years. It's said that Eddie had some other plans for the show (like an ending totally different from Go-Onger's and the one that Chip wrote, another story arc between Dillon and Tenaya, revelation of Dr. K's actually name, etc). If he hadn't gotten fired, we most likely would've seen those happen. It was a good season. It was unique in it's own way, and it didn't need to copy elements from the Sentai material.

And finally, my last example, Power Rangers Operation Overdrive. The basic premise of a millionaire relic hunter funding his own team of rangers to find the jewels of the Corona Aurora was amazing in theory. What we got was FAR different than that. The rangers weren't very likeable, the story was muddy, and I feel like a lot of the characters were so one note it felt like I was watching the same episode with a different adjective each week. This season is just absolutely terrible, but it did show Power Rangers' true colors. It had so much potential, and it all went down the drain.

Overall, Power Rangers doesn't need to stay true to the original material Sentai offers. It's just some of the writers and producers (I'm looking right at you, Tzachor and Kalish) are just lazy to come up with something original. Yes, we did have some good seasons that stayed true to the original content like Lost Galaxy and Time Force, but it's just we want to see something new and interesting. I'm hoping that we'll see something new and creative for Season 18. If not, make it a good adaptation, Tzachor.

Will Power Rangers Be in Good Hands with Nickelodeon?

The fact that Saban is currently affiliated with Nickelodeon aside from Toei, things may get into better hands. Why? Well here are some of my good reasons:

I find the humor in Nickelodeon somewhat compatible with East and West. Well since Power Rangers is meant to be lighthearted compared to Sentai, I think Saban has new room for fresh humor he can learn from Carranger and Go-onger but of course, minus the perversity. I don't know why but I wish Saban will get an Oriental red ranger (once and only once, hee hee) and maybe make his original monster out of Nickelodeon's greatest idiotic cartoon characters for a special episode.

I think there's quite of potential among Nickelodeon's cast even if some of them still need to improve in their acting. IMO I like Nickelodeon's cast members better than Disney's current cast. In fact, not only good-looking but quite more professional. The only thing I don't like about Nickelodeon is the slime thing. At least if anybody gets to become a spoiled brat in the script, only the character not the celebrity will annoy us.

The thing is this kind of mentality is a big problem and this blog won't tolerate it. And yup the children of the U.S. don't know much about Sentai except that is if they grew up or something, or watched Japanese television. However such a comment above is so full of hate... and not to mention the American superiority mentality.

Pissed Sentai 2000x? I don't think so. Honestly speaking, Toei allowed Saban to create Power Rangers so they can penetrate the American market so why write such comments? I hope I'm doing a good job even if I like Sentai more.

And for one thing, Power Rangers has a multi-cultural team so why lash Japan? Even if Sentai's an all-Japanese team, however the team has been friendly to its half-breed members if there are any that appear. Also, I believe Saban's purpose of creating Power Rangers was to blend in East and West concepts. After all, the purpose of this blog is to stop the severity of both sides right? Besides, there were plenty of interracial romances in Power Rangers too.

Saban/Judd Lynn Era Civil War

In the Super Sentai fandom, fans of course always argue which seasons are the best and which are the worst. Now, during the Saban/Lynn Era, many of the fans are very split on which were the best and which were the worst. Being the era of following Sentai's ways, while having great quality, it was inevitable that the fans are so divided in this era.



Power Rangers in Space. Many fans absolutely loved the story of Andros and Astronema. And fans also loved the search for Zordon and the space themes that supported it. And "Countdown to Destruction" is considered by many to be the best finale ever, wrapping up the six season long story. The characters also got a lot of good character development.



Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Lots of fans were torn on this season. A lot of this has to do with the transition of the Zordon Era to the Saban/Lynn Era. To all fans, it also depended on if the story made sense to you or not. Some fans thought Lost Galaxy's story was perfect. And other fans thought Lost Galaxy's story was mostly incoherent and lackluster.



Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. Considered by many to be the worst of this era (unless you count Wild Force). Fans really disliked the episodic nature of this show compared to Lost Galaxy and Time Force which had more arcs going on for them. Fans also criticized Lightspeed Rescue for having a lame motif (rescuing), "bland characters," and terrible team-ups. Though fans of this season view Lightspeed Rescue as having everything you'd want in Power Rangers. Though strangely, they seem to be few and far in between. Hey DancingAlienDude. I know you absolutely love Lightspeed Rescue. Perhaps you'd like to add on to this?



Power Rangers Time Force. Another very popular season. And considered by many to be the most well made season out of them all. Time Force fans are often in conflict against the In Space fans. Space fans often criticize Time Force for copying too much from Timeranger, calling it a lazy carbon copy. Time Force was praised by many fans for easily being the darkest story in the era, allowing elements like death, intense drama, and terrorism. And fans considered Time Force to have some of the best acting ever in the franchise! And the cast was very well liked by fans.



Power Rangers Wild Force. For those who count Wild Force as part of the era, it is considered by many to be the worst season in the era. Due to being an even more carbon copy of it's Sentai counterpart than Time Force, having below par acting, and the overuse of zords. Fans also accuse Wild Force for setting up the style that would evolve into the style used for the Disney seasons. Fans greatly praise the two team-ups that are present in this season, but rarely anything else in it. Considered by many to be the best team ups in the show to date.

So overall, it seems like In Space and Time Force are the most praised, due to having a strong coherent storyline and likable characters. While other elements like acting, borrowing sentai material, and overall performances kept the fans of these two seasons against each other. The whole Zordon Era vs Saban/Lynn Era also plays a role here. Lost Galaxy was hit or miss by fans. And because of that, it has a hard time keeping up with Space and Time Force. When fans love Lost Galaxy, to them, it can easily beat both Space and Time Force. But when they don't, fans rank Lost Galaxy below those two. Lightspeed Rescue gets even more criticism for it's episodic format and for just being plain "lame" with it's motif. As a result, Rescue often has difficulty keeping up with Space, Lost Galaxy, and Time Force. Finally, Wild Force mostly seems to only get praise by fans who loved seeing Gaoranger in English. Usually, it doesn't really compete much with the other four seasons.
