My Thoughts and Speculations on Shinkenger's Adaptation as Power Rangers Samurai as a Sentai Fan

For the first time, this Power Rangers series has a title more straight to the theme as in just "Samurai" instead of the past where it had two words like "Lost Galaxy". Somehow, Saban may be simplifying titles.

So far the names were changed. We have Jayden, Kevin, Mike, Mia and Emily. Cooler than the previous names which were Reese, Baron, Perry, Sadie and Ava.

How do I think it will differ from Shinkenger? Well here are some:

• Since the red ranger, Jayden, is American so it's most likely he's no shadow warrior and just your American guy interested in martial arts.
  
• Although their mentor is played by an American, but in the script he's most likely Japanese. Naming him Takeru may be tribute to the original series. So I think the mentor will not be serving as an attendant to Jayden but the regular Sentai mentor.
• Probably these guys know nothing about kanji except for the Asian ranger Mia.
• Maybe and just maybe, Saban will attempt to make it a funny series. Then again, Shinkenger wasn't that serious either.
  

Other thoughts as a Shinkenger fan:

• Maybe Asian red rangers just don't click with America. I think that's true so I can understand that.
  
• Jayden may turn out to be half-Asian himself. Who knows? Some half-Asian, half-Americans even if their father is the one who's Asian look more American.
• Mia may become either like Cassie Chan or Trini Kwan in personality.
  
• Only if people didn't criticize Trini Kwan's existence as racist, maybe we'll get another Asian yellow ranger with a tough personality that can drive her team crazy. I would actually have preferred an Asian yellow ranger over an Asian pink ranger.
  

The New Power Rangers Cast Looks Promising

I found this picture on Morphin' Legacy and I think there's going to be a LOT of great things to come from these guys. So maybe, some things I wanted to happen didn't happen (life isn't perfect) but I'm seeing these newbies will probably start their career right with Saban's adaptation of Shinkenger.

An Extended Thought on Reese for Power Rangers 2011

Looking at him, I'm sensing some of those moments in American films where an American guy gets interested with the world of martial arts and learns it's a HARD road but not impossible as he travels life's journey.

How am I seeing this? I think he may just be the opposite to Takeru in some ways. Maybe he'll be a more sociable, less aloof guy for the series. Maybe, he'll also be somebody who may end up being a fan of martial arts films before he becomes the red ranger. Looking at the symbol of fire, he may be a hot character but maybe not as fiery as Takeru.

Getting an Asian red ranger may actually cause Power Rangers to jump the shark. Maybe not. However I'm having a feeling Haim Saban may have spent some time watching films like American Ninja or Last Samurai, or any related movie where a white guy gets immersed into martial arts or any East meets West themed films. I think Reese will be an East meets West guy, maybe somebody who never expected himself to be the leader of the group. :-P

Or what if he's half-Asian? Hmmm... some Asian-Americans I've met look too American too.

Some Thoughts on How Power Rangers 2011's Rangers Will Be

By looking at the fact that the red ranger is well... still American gives me the feeling that Haim Saban's new season may be inspired by the films "Forbidden Kingdom" and "The Monkey King" where an American guy gets involved in martial arts. So here's what I'm thinking will happen with some of the characters when they make their debut:

Reese- A white guy interested in Asian martial arts and gets it when he becomes the red ranger. I think he'll most likely be an enthusiast who learns the road ahead is not an easy one. Okay I'm a little disappointed in this but still, I think he'll do a good job. I wonder if he'll be a little like Jason in the movie "The Forbidden Kingdom" in terms of personality? I even have a feeling he might get pretty impatient at first until he realizes patience is necessary in learning martial arts.

Parry- Well maybe somebody who's not very enthusiastic with his duties.

Baron- I think he'll be the cool character because of the color blue. Nothing more.

Sadie- She may display plenty of positive Asian values. Since she is the Asian member, so I think she'll have some interesting back story. I kind of think about the typical Asian-American romance may be in for her. Maybe not. Hee hee.

Ava- I think she'll be a westernized version of her Shinkenger counterpart Kotoha. Honestly I wish she were the Asian one. :-P

Wesley- I think he'll be a little less funny than Genta and more organized as a fighter when he arrives.

A Peek at Power Rangers 2011

The cast for Power Rangers 2011 are as follows:

Alex Heartman as Reese
Najee De Tiege as Baron
Hector David Jr. as Parry
Erika Fong as Sadie
Brittany Pirtle as Ava
Steven Skyler as Wesley

I don't know yet what it will be called but by the looks of this, can understand why the red ranger is still white- because of the target audience. The pink ranger's the only Asian? Hmmm I wonder what's really going on or what the story line is? So far, I think these are new ones. However I hope the script is well-written otherwise it may make the comeback bad. I just kind of wonder if an Asian will act as their sensei because it's been in some where an Asian guy trains white men in fighting. Could it be the case of the red ranger with the script? We'll just find out soon. I sense much of a "Forbibben Kingdom" style theme here.

Similarities between Power Rangers' Jason and Sentai's Takeru

We obviously know they're both Red rangers/heroes and the fact that they've made excellent leaders for both their teams. However, Sean did mention the fact of the newer Sentai leaders having nostalgic backgrounds to the first Power Rangers leaders. I thought I can point out a few. I chose Takeru since he's the one I know best.

Takeru was considered one of the best Red heroes of the 00's era. Whereas Jason was considered the best Red Ranger of all time. What could possibly give them these titles? Jason, obviously, had often been the most serious during battle with Rita's monsters. Of course we know he was a fun guy outside being a ranger, but the same went with Takeru. Takeru is perhaps the most serious of all the red rangers in the past many Sentai series'. From what I recall, he had only been caught laughting or smiling whenever Genta (ShinkenGold) did something hilarious. And that didn't happen too often.

Furthermore, Jason was the most passionate about dealing with Rita. Takeru was the same, but he was more on the side of protecting himself rather than defeating the Ayakashi. The rangers/heroes were more loyal to their leaders, Jason and Takeru, more than most other series' had displayed in their respective shows.

Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Hart

Somehow if there was something that somewhat kept MMPR running, I guess it had to do with this official couple above. The two had such a wonderful chemistry that I believe it kept the show with high ratings among the older fans. So I kind of thought of it that they too, had a really good chemistry.

So okay the kiss didn't commence until Tommy temporarily lost his green ranger powers (in contrast to Burai's death in Zyuranger) and that, Tommy's return reunited them together. The two became an item and it was one big reason why I liked the show- the two were a hot couple. I can never forget that Christmas kiss they had and those so-wonderful moments.

However it happened- Amy Jo Johnson formally left the set for some reason and so Catherine Sutherland was forced into the script. Then it happened that in Zeo, Tommy received a stupid Dear John letter (which is bad writing IMO because it's totally out of character for that to happen for Kimberly as a likable character) and thus the Tommy and Catherine relationship was inserted to fill that gap by the writers. Besides, I felt just as if the whole franchise drowned during that time.

During the Turbo movie, I was hoping they'd be reunited but sigh, I don't even wonder why Tommy Oliver never questioned Kimberly Hart about that Dear John letter.

Later in Super Sentai, it seems these fan pairings give me a "little glimpse" of Tommy and Kimberly as a couple:

Satoru Akashi and Sakura Nishihori- For some reason, I think Satoru Akashi can be like Tommy Oliver (in a more matured way) and Sakura Nishihori well when she lightens up, she's almost like Kimberly Hart (the episode where she got all ditzy and girly). However they never officially became a couple but all we know is that Sakura Nishihori is hopelessly in love with Satoru Akashi.

Takeru Shiba and Mako Shiraishi- I don't know but for some reason, I also tend to think of Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Hart with these two though they never are officially a couple but are hinted to be one. Well Mako Shiraishi like Kimberly Hart is the hot babe of the show, girly but can get tough if need be.

18/21 of voters say they are irritated by the MMPR and Shinkenger fans who shun many other series'. Before we get to the argument whether they're overrated or not, keep in mind these two series' from Sentai and PR have been the first for many. If we all enjoyed them, why can't the little kids?

14/24 votes chose Samurai Sentai Shinkenger over Power Rangers RPM. Both terrific seasons in my opinion. There's no reason for the two to be at war at all, so this poll will hopefully put an end to that.

Shinkenger fans vs 00's Era Sentai fans

I will probably not be active for a very long time. Until Summer Vacation starts here in the US (for my foreign fans), expect less and less blogs from me. Don't worry, as long as the blog remains than Power Rangers and Super Sentai will never go against one-another (in our grounds). :-)

The hype for Shinkenger had been far more annoying than the Jetman hype had reigned during the 90's. Why is that? Shinkenger had been so "great" a Sentai and surpassed fans' expectations after they had seen the supposed failure of Go-Onger. Go-Onger had not been a bad Sentai, actually. However, Power Rangers RPM fanboys and Shinkenger fanboys both had their share of underrating the series.

I will admit the fact the cast of Shinkenger was amazingly memorable. The characters were amazing, and most were dynamic throughout the series. The only problem which caused this to suffer somewhat is the entire story was circled around Takeru Shiba, ShinkenRed. Furthermore, he is perhaps the one of the only Sentai heroes wielding an armor very similar to the Power Rangers battelizer. Fanboys will love it, but average Sentai fans will disagree on the use of Hyper ShinkenRed.

The mecha wasn't the best either. The origami idea, from the point of view from many Sentai fans, had been corny for them. Many fans of Super Sentai claimed some of the mecha wasn't necessary, and the overall layout of the robots could do with improvement. Not that the overpowering of the mecha is bad, but many want to know "Why would they need this?"

Also, Shinkenger fans had overrated the show due to the Kamen Rider Decade crossover. It wasn't bad at all, but there've been much better crossovers in Sentai history. The most memorable being "Gaoranger v. Super Sentai" and "Boukenger v. Super Sentai" were all amazing crossovers from TV Japan.

A typical Sentai fan who enjoys the 00's Sentai shows will probably choose either Timeranger or Gekiranger as the best. Due to their more original ideas and lack of the corniness. They would also take more time in watching every series before making the conclusion. Shinkenger would be one of the best, but yet the fans of the one show fail to realize several other Sentai series' hold much similar features.

Shinkenger, however, had been a very appealing show to many Sentai fans who've been close to abandoning their interest. Which is not a bad thing, and Shinkenger could perhaps be the reason why Goseiger is getting enough attention. The only down side was other Sentai series' were shunned due to Shinkenger's popularity.

Saban's New Season? Shinkenger?

Recently there've been rumors going around that Haim Saban had been given the rights to make a new PR season. However, it's also argued whether he will use Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (2009 Sentai series) or Tensou Sentai Goseiger (current airing series). A lot of Power Rangers fans are proud to have a new season, while Sentai fans are more of mix-minded. Meh, some will love it and some will not... Lets talk about this right now.

Seeing as though I didn't find Shinkenger to be to enjoyable, I think it would actually find it possible for a PR counterpart. Sentai fanboys can shut the hell up about Shinkenger being "OMG ITS TOO JAPANESE FOR PR". Well, PR actually did a great job with Ninja Storm and surprisingly half-decent with the Alien Rangers.

Well, yeah they weren't really good seasons. But how could it possibly make Shinkenger's adaptation any different. Possibly if Saban had Judd Lynn involved in the new season of Power Rangers, Shinkenger's Power Rangers will be as good or even better than the original.

Now suppose it turned out good. Should we be expecting a movie if Saban takes this serious enough?

Since I haven't seen a single episode of Goseiger yet (I had been focusing on anime and tennis recently), it's impossible for me to make a Goseiger side of this story.

I'll base my opinion on Fantasy Leader's, that is, if he still even knows this blog exists. Please make a blog for your opinions on Goseiger and PR, FL. And please be more active.

Common Weapons by the Sentai fandom

NOTE:: Though I think your idea on overrated Power Rangers is really good, Sean, I think I'll focus more on promoting positive Power Rangers opinions since my blog's not very famous yet.


Yeah, I won't deny the fact that Jetman is an amazing Sentai. However, much of the Sentai fanboys who shun PR is because they complain that Jetman is much better than MMPR and all the other seasons. Of course, don't get me wrong, Jetman was much, much better than MMPR but many don't even give a crap to try something new.

Jetman, IMO, is the most praised Sentai of all time. Unfortunately, it is also the reason why the PR fandom is widely hated by Sentai fans.



Dairanger was the secret weapon used by the Sentai fandom to bring down MMPR S2. Dairanger is also the 2nd greatest Sentai of all time. This series was much better than all 3 seasons of MMPR, don't get me wrong. But then again, the Sentai fandom still tried to continue to bash Power Rangers with one of the deepest and most serious Sentais ever.



Sentai fans praised Time Force for being faithful to Timeranger. Not everybody thought this was an achievement for Saban. Some Sentai fanboys will even bash Time Force for not being dark enough to Timeranger, and also complain that Time Force is unoriginal and is nothing but a rip-off of the series. Also, plenty of the Sentai fandom will say that the villains of Time Force were nothing but watered-down cheesy versions of the originals.


WARNING:: I'm afraid I will dissapoint a large number of the Sentai fandom if I write this down, since in fact, it is the most loved show of this generation.




Yep, you're surprised huh? Shinkenger also happens to be the reason several other Sentai seasons are underrated. Shinkenger fanboys (not Super Sentai fanboys) had often bashed RPM because Shinkenger was much deeper and had better characters. Don't forget that Shinkenger-lovers will shun several other of the previous Sentai shows because it was so amazing.

Shinkenger, in my opinion, is really good, but highly overrated.

As a fan of both, it's hard to stay neutral. I don't know whether this blog hurt the Sentai fandom or overpraised the Power Rangers fandom.
